Successful Melody

Melody Joy Kramer '06 earned the head-spinning title of "Most popular woman at NPR's Fresh Air (and it's not Terry Gross)" in a recent April article on the inside-journalism Neiman Journalism Lab website. The NPR radio show is produced at Philadelphia's WHYY, where Kramer was hired two years ago as the show's first and only web producer. Taking a show with almost no social media presence, Kramer has grown the show's Twitter followers from 3,800 to more than 71,000, and landed more than 60,000 Tumblr followers in 20 months. The secret of her success? Not following the rules for building a social media following. "I think I just know how to talk to people," Kramer said. After the article was published, she said she was surprised at the number of people, many complete strangers, who contacted her and mentioned that they remembered her DP column. Kramer was a popular DP columnist for two years, but but it has been six years since her last DP column. Fittingly, in that last DP column, she wrote "I don't know what I'm doing in May, but no matter where I'm working or studying, I will write -- hopefully for an audience larger than my immediate family." Mission accomplished, Melody! Read the full Neiman article of Kramer here.
